Salatul Isthikhara

This is an engagement ceremony, the families of the bride and groom along with close relatives and friends gather to celebrate it. In the presence of guests, the bride and groom exchange their rings. Guests and relatives bring gifts, sweets, clothes and sometimes cash. 


This may be an adopted pre-wedding ritual. One or two days before the Nikah, the bride wears a yellow dress. Uptan is prepared with turmeric, rose water and sandalwood powder to apply on the bride’s hands, feet and face. Women actively take part in this ritual by applying Uptan one by one to the bride. After the application of Uptan, the bride takes a bath. After the ceremony is over, the bride cannot leave her house until her wedding day.


In this ritual, henna paste is applied on the hands and feet of the bride and other women participate in it. They make beautiful designs on the hands and feet of the bride. In the present scenario, professional artists are hired to complete this task. 

Wedding day rituals

Men and women sit separately for the ceremony. Women are supposed to sit with the bride and men with the groom. The groom’s family is supposed to give Mehr to the bride; generally, this is a pre-decided amount of money. The Maulvi recites Quranic verses to start the Nikah. Later he asks the bride if she is ready to marry the groom at the said amount of Meher. She is supposed to give her consent by saying the phrase, Qubool hai, then Maulvi repeats the same procedure with the groom. This is a grand reception given by the groom. Family members, relatives and friends gather to congratulate the groom and relish traditional Muslim mouthwatering delicacies like Qorma, Biryani, Nihari, etc.
